The Benefits

Why signing with your baby is beneficial for the whole family

Until recent years, sign language was used as a method of communicating only with the Deaf Community and we have them to thank for this beautiful language. Now, through the findings of over two decades of research, it has been shown conclusively that signing is also an effective way to communicate with hearing babies.

There are few greater gifts than we can give our children than the ability to communicate with each other.

Research shows us that babies who sign...

  • Communicate before they can speak - babies understand language long before they are actually able to speak. By using signs with your baby you will empower them to communicate before their muscles are developed enough to make speech production possible. So signing enables pre-verbal babies to ‘talk' with us. We always prefer to spend time in the company of people that understand us, why should babies be any different? Your baby is bursting with things to say!
  • Speak earlier than non-signing babies - another well established and researched fact is that babies that sign learn to speak sooner and develop larger vocabularies than their non-signing peers. Researchers have also shown how signing may help boost your baby's verbal IQ by as much as 10 - 12 points
  • Experience less frustration - it's easy to see how using signs with your baby reduces frustration for you both. If you give a baby a way to communicate, there should be very little reason for frustration. Babies learn quickly that there's no need to cry or whinge: by signing, they get their needs met instantly!
  • Show a greater interest in books - for babies that sign, reading becomes an interactive experience: they choose the books and tell you what the story is about!
